Capstone Internship

Internship Title

My internship is at the IU Health GI and Hepatology department as an operations intern. In this internship I became part of the team immediately by participating in weekly department improvement meetings. I also shadow all roles in the department including patient facing roles. I work with my supervisor on data projects on a weekly basis.

Primary Responsibilities and Projects

  1. My first responsibility is to be present and participate in our weekly department improvement meeting. We go over metrics and develop a plan to improve them.

  2. I shadow all the different types of position my department has so that I can understand how everything works. It also helps me figure out what positions I would like in the future.

  3. I work with my supervisor on data pulling and data analysis projects. An example of one we recently did was reworking the nursing assignments for the Fishers clinic.

  4. I also help co-workers when needed if they need assistance on a project.

Learning Objectives and Outcomes

1. Understand the day to day operations of the department.

2. Learn how to work with a team in all different positions to be able to complete the task at hand.

3. Learn the roles of each separate job title.

4. Understand the basics of data analysis and be able to help.

5. Understand healthcare metrics and ways they can be improved.

Projects

I am unable to upload pictures of my projects due to the information on them but I would like to give some detail on the things I have worked on.

One of my long term projects that me and my supervisor worked on was reworking the nursing assignments for the clinic in Fishers. I pulled all of the work logs from the last 3 years and broke down the information in an excel document. I then organized the relevant data so the clinic manager can make the best decision on reworking the schedule.
